Disclosed herein are benzimidazole compounds of formula I, wherein the substituents are as defined within the specification. Such compounds are inhibitors of histone deacetylase (HDAC) and are useful in treatment related to or associated with enzymes having histone deactetylase activities such as Neurodegenerative diseases including Huntingtons disease, Parkinsons disease, Alzheimers disease metabolic diseases including type 2 diabetes as well as Proliferative disorders including cancer. Also disclosed are methods of synthesising compounds of formula I, and pharmaceutical compositions comprising said compounds. Examples of particularly preferred compounds include: 3-[1-(3-Dimethylamino-2,2-dimethyl-propyl)-2-(2,2-dimethyl-propyl)-1 H-benzoimidazol-5-yl]-N-hydroxy-acrylamide 3-[2-Butyl-1-(3-dimethylamino-2,2-dimethylpropyl)-1 H-benzoim idazol-5-yl]-N-hydroxy-acrylamide 3-[1-(3-Dimethylamino-2,2-dimethyl-propyl)-2-(3,3,3-trifluoro-propyl)-1 H-benzoimidazol-5-yl]-N-hydroxy-acrylamide 3-[1-(3-Dimethylamino-2,2-dimethyl-propyl)-2-methyl-1 H-benzoimidazol-5-yl]-N-hydroxy acrylamide
