Disclosed is an apparatus for providing a supply of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) to the airway of a patient. The apparatus comprises a flow generator (34), means for determining respiratory air flow (50) and pressure (48) in a patient interface (30), means for measuring patient impedance of the airway and a controller (62). The flow generator is adapted to supply CPAP therapy and is coupled to an air delivery tube (32) coupled with the patient interface. The patient interface is configured to sealingly engage with the face of the patient. The means for measuring patient impedance of the airway is used during a period of a breathing cycle when an apnea is not occurring. The controller is configured to detect the occurrence of an apnea and to determine the patency of the patient&rsquos airway during the apnea. The controller controls application of an oscillatory pressure waveform of known frequency to the patient interface and measures an apnea impedance of the airway during the apnea. The apnea impedance is then compared with the patient impedance to determine whether the airway is patent, or obstructed (open or closed apnea).
