PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide treatment of infectious diseases, especially sepsis and septic shock, or a method for treating sepsis-like conditions and to provide therapeutic compositions.SOLUTION: Provided is a polypeptide comprising one or more sequences derived from CDR2 or CDR3 of a TREM-1 protein characterized by its ability to treat, ameliorate or lessen the symptoms of sepsis, septic shock or sepsis-like conditions. The polypeptide comprises contiguous but less than 30 amino acids in the 30 amino acids of the TREM-1 protein.
