Fat embolism syndrome (FES) is a serious and potentially life threatening complication of long bone fractures. FES results in respiratory failure due to inflammatory reaction in lung parenchyma, leading to death. One of the existing approaches for treatment of FES involves giving corticosteroids to patients, parenterally in high or low doses but has limitations of systemic complications, infection and non-union or delayed union of the fractures due to which surgeons are reluctant to use it. No composition is available to PREVENT FES. Present invention discloses for the first time, an inhalational composition of Ciclesonide (CIC) for the prevention of FES and hypoxemia in trauma victims. Incidence of FES was found to be only 6% in patients receiving CIC as a prophylactic treatment whereas it was 26% in patients not receiving any prophylaxis. This difference was statistically significant (Chi-square test, P=0.022) indicating the effectiveness of inhalational CIC in prevention of FES.
