Process for treating water containing aromatic hydrocarbons includes at least the following steps: (i) introducing a stream (I) comprising water and aromatic hydrocarbons selected from the group consisting of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene into a column, (ii) contacting stream (I) with a second stream (II) in countercurrent, and (iii) removing a third stream (III) comprising water and aromatic hydrocarbons selected from the group consisting of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene. Concentration of aromatic hydrocarbons is ≤3 mg/l in terms of the volume of stream (III).
