The present invention provides a process for the preparation of metadoxine. The said process comprises reaction of pyridoxine salt with alkaline compounds to produce pyridoxine free base and further reacting pyridoxine free base with L-2-Pyrolidine-5-Carboxylic acid in presence of alcoholic medium to produce metadoxine and finally subjecting the product thus obtained to a further step of purification to obtain pure metadoxine.
