The invention relates to novel derivatives of short-chain fatty acids, inparticular derivatives of butyric acid, usefulfor all the known clinical applications of the latter, which showphysicochemical characteristics suitable for an easy oraladministration, being devoid of the unpleasant organoleptic properties thatcharacterise butyrate. The new compounds are amidederivatives which can be synthesised by reaction of the corresponding fattyacid halide with a naturally occurring amino acid,phenylalanine or a suitable derivative thereof, and which are in a poorlyhygroscopic, easily weighable form, stable to acids and alkalis andable to release the acid at the small and large bowel level in a constantmanner over time. They do not have disagreeable odoursand are practically tasteless, thus allowing the manufacture of preparationsfor oral administration also suitable for the therapy ofchronic diseases and in the paediatric field.
