Provided is a novel therapeutic or prophylactic agent for osteoarthritis, which relies on the mechanism of degeneration of a synovial membrane. A vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) antagonist can relieve an edema associated with osteoarthritis, can inhibit the change of a synovial membrane, and can remedy a clinical symptom. The expression of a potent protease such as MMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-3 and plasmin was observed in a synovial membrane of an OA patient. It was considered that the expression of these proteases was induced directly by VEGF-A or indirectly through the induction of the expression of urokinase by VEGF-A. Therefore, the expression of these proteases can be inhibited, the degeneration and/or destruction of an articular cartilage can be inhibited, and osteoarthritis can be treated and/or prevented using a preparation containing a substance capable of inhibiting a VEGF, i.e., a VEGF antagonist, more specifically an anti-VEGF antibody, as an active ingredient.La présente invention concerne un nouvel agent thérapeutique ou prophylactique pour l'arthrose, qui est basé sur le mécanisme de dégénérescence d'une membrane synoviale.
