Improved tourniquet apparatus for measuring a patient's limb occlusionpressure includes an inflatable tourniquetcuff for encircling a limb at a location and to which a tourniquet instrumentis releasably connectable. The instrument includespressure sensing for producing a cuff pressure signal indicative of the levelof pressure in the cuff, a pressure regulation mechanismcommunicating with the cuff and responsive to the cuff pressure signal formoving fluid into and out of the cuff, thereby regulatingthe pressure in the cuff, a blood flow transducer for producing a blood flowsignal indicative of blood flow past the cuff, and limbocclusion pressure means responsive to the blood flow signal and the cuffpressure signal for increasing the cuff pressure level untilblood flow indicated by the blood flow signal decreases to a level less than aminimum detection threshold, and then suspendingfluid movement into and out of the cuff to produce a limb occlusion pressurevalue that is indicative of a pressure in the cuff whenthe fluid motion is suspended.
