To provide a sterilization device which can surely perform sterilization processing while achieving simplification, downsizing and the like of the structure, and which can smooth and accelerate the sterilization processing, which can improve productivity and which can achieve low cost, and to provide a sterilization method.SOLUTION: A sterilization device which performs sterilization processing by irradiating a container P having an opening P1 with ultraviolet light includes: a cylindrical surface-shaped light source 10 which has an outer contour capable of being inserted in the container P from the opening P1, which is formed to have a length that covers substantially the entire area in the depth direction of the container, and which emits ultraviolet light radially； and a support drive mechanism 20 which supports and drives so as to advance/retreat freely with respect to the cylindrical surface-shaped light source with respect to the container.
