Present invention relates to a process for the preparation and pharmaceutical usage of dihydrate form of lanthanum carbonate. Present process produces lanthanum carbonate dihydrate (La2(CO3)3.2H2O) free of lanthanum hydroxycarbonate and is stable at ambient condition. Lanthanum carbonate dihydrate exhibit improved performance over standard lanthanum carbonate tetrahydrate in phosphate binding studies. Lanthanum carbonate dihydrate is useful for the treatment of hyperphosphataemia in patients with renal failure.La présente invention porte sur un procédé pour la préparation et l'utilisation pharmaceutique de la forme dihydratée du carbonate de lanthane. Le présent procédé produit du carbonate de lanthane dihydraté (La2(CO3)3.2H2O) exempt d'hydroxycarbonate de lanthane et est stable dans les conditions ambiantes. Le carbonate de lanthane dihydraté présente une performance améliorée par rapport au carbonate de lanthane tétrahydraté standard dans des études de fixation du phosphate. Le carbonate de lanthane dihydraté est utile pour le traitement de l'hyperphosphatémie chez des patients souffrant d'une insuffisance rénale.
