To provide treatment of a wide range of relapsed or refractory cancer in a human patient using a specific compound targeting cancer stem cells.SOLUTION: The invention provides NUC-1031 (gemcitabine-[phenyl-benzoxy-L-alaninyl)]-phosphate) for use in targeting cancer stem cells. The targeting of cancer stem cells with NUC-1031 is employed in prevention or treatment of cancer. The invention relates to the use of NUC-1031 (gemcitabine-[phenyl-benzoxy-L-alaninyl)]-phosphate) for treatment of relapsed or refractory cancer in a human patient.
