In oneaspect, the article includes substantially water-insoluble, water-swellable,non-regenerated, carboxyalkyl cellulose fibers, where the fibers have a surfacehaving the appearance of the surface of a cellulose fiber, and where the fiberscomprise a plurality of non permanent intra-fiber metal crosslinks and a pluralityof temporary intra-fiber crosslinks.
