A swimming monitor which measures the physical activity of a user during swimming comprises a sensor unit 210 coupled to swimming goggles 108. The sensor unit comprises a motion detector to measure physical motion of the user and an optical cardiac activity detector. Also provided is wireless communication circuitry which allows transfer of motion and cardiac data to an external device. In an embodiment the device can provide vibration based audio feedback through an audio module (220, figure 3A) comprising of an electroacoustic transducer. Electrical signals can be converted into mechanical vibrations or vice versa. The device may detect turns by a user during swimming and provide audio notification of for example, a recorded lap time.
