Disclosed is a method for treating a plant with an anti-microbial agent comprising contacting a plant or a portion thereof with a composition that comprises at least one compound or complex that releases silver having a valence of 2+ or higher, said compound or complex being selected from the group consisting of a silver periodate, a silver biguanide, a silver oxide nitrate, a silver (II) oxide, oxysilver hydrogen sulfate, and combinations thereof, thereby treating the plant material.
