An injection systemin-cludes a syringe and a plunger. A wipersidewall of the plunger defines a cavity,into which a plunger shaft of the system isinserted, for moving the plunger, withinthe syringe, for fluid injection. Theplunger includes a feature for engagingthe shaft, and the sidewall preferablyin-cludes an expandable-contractiblepor-tion, in which the feature is formed. Whenthe plunger is initially mounted within afirst length of the syringe, theexpandable--contractible portion of the sidewall isex-panded and the feature of the plungerdoes not operably engage the insertedshaft. When the shaft moves the plungerinto a second length of the syringe, theexpandable-contractible portion of thesidewall contracts and the featureopera-bly engages the shaft. An optionalde-formable end wall of the plunger may bespaced apart from a distal terminal end ofthe inserted shaft.
