A drug delivery device having a dose delivery sensing capability is provided. The sensing element is attached to the device's dose setting member. The elements to be sensed include radially-spaced surface features from each other. The rotation sensor is attached to the actuator of the device. The rotation sensor includes a movable element that can be brought into contact with the surface feature. The rotation sensor is configured to generate a signal in response to movement of the movable element over the surface feature during rotation of the surface feature. The controller is operatively coupled to the rotation sensor, and in response to receiving the generated signal, the controller is configured to determine the number of surface features that pass through the movable element of the rotation sensor during administration delivery. Such number can be related to the delivered dose.
