A use-limiting connector for limiting use of an electrical tool, such as a medical device, includes a plunger 110 movable between a first position and a second position, and a biasing member 130, such as a coiled spring, configured to urge the plunger into the first position and configured to incrementally uncoil into respective torsional states as the plunger moves between the first position and the second position. As the connector is connected and disconnected, the plunger moves and end 134 of the spring moves along a track. After being connected a pre-determined number of times the end rests against contact pin 120 and the circuit is permanently closed. A tool controller (172, Fig 7) detects the closed circuit and does not supply power to the tool. In a modification the controller supplies power in response to a closed circuit but not an open one.
