Various embodiments of an exhalation valve and a filtering face mask including such an exhalation valve are disclosed. The exhalation valve can include a valve seat and a valve flap disposed over the sealing surface and orifice of the valve seat. When the exhalation valve is placed in a closed configuration to prevent fluid from flowing through the valve seat, the valve flap is sealed against the sealing surface of the valve seat. The valve seat orifice may comprise a substantially circular shape in a plane defined by the first major surface of the valve seat.
