A retractable syringe (10) with a retractable needle (40) and a plunger (20) is disclosed. The syringe uses a spring (70) to retract the needle, the plunger having a mounted plunger seal (80) which engages and retains a retractable needle (40) consisting of a needle body (42) needle seal (43) and needle (41). Once engaged the spring retracts the plunger and retractable needle containing the needle inside the body of the syringe. The plunger can be released from the plunger seal by unscrewing the plunger via a screw projection at its distal end (26). The plunger can also be broken at a frangible section of the plunger to prevent re-use.
