The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating thrombosis comprising a Sphagnum palustre extract and a health functional food comprising the Sphagnum palustre extract and, more particularly, to a pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating thrombosis comprising a hot water extract of Sphagnum palustre, organic solvent fractions, and water-soluble water residues after organic solvent fractionation as active components, and a health functional food comprising the same. Water residues obtained after sequential organic solvent fractionation of a Sphagnum palustre extract of the present invention, particularly a hot water extract of Sphagnum palustre, have effects that are capable of efficiently suppressing the generation of thrombosis by exhibiting strong antithrombotic activities, and have excellent effects that the water residues can be used for preventing and treating thrombosis such as ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke by improving blood circulation. Further, a Sphagnum palustre extract of the present invention can be safely used without hemolytic activities for human red blood cells, has excellent thermal stability, and does not exhibit losses of activities even at an acidic condition of pH 2 and in human plasma. Therefore, a Sphagnum palustre extract of the present invention is processed into various forms such as an extract, an emulsion, a powder, a pill, a tablet and others such that the Sphagnum palustre extract can be used very usefully in pharmaceutical and food industries.
