Disclosed herein is an improved electrolytic cell (20). The cell (20) includes at least one pair of electrodes, an anode (22) and a cathode (24). In general the anode (22) includes at least one dimension, which is substantially greater than the cathode (24). In an exemplary embodiment, the length and the width of the anode are greater than the length and width of the cathode. In a first embodiment of a multi-cell chlorine generator, unequal dimension electrodes are stacked together. In a second embodiment of such a generator, the electrodes are of equal dimensions. In another exemplary embodiment of the improved electrolytic cell in accordance with this invention, the cathode (24) forms a U-shaped member and the anode (22) of at least one dimension being greater is located there between.
