One object is to provide an electric vehicle that does not move when a user grips the handle with one hand and puts his/her weight on the electric vehicle while trying to pick up goods with the other hand, and to provide a method of controlling the electric vehicle. The electric vehicle 10 includes: a wheel 13 provided on a frame 11 a brake unit 20 for braking the wheel 13 a pair of handles 14 to be individually operated by a user and an operation sensing means for sensing whether individual ones of the pair of handles 14 are operated by the user. A control unit 16 controls the brake unit 20 based on a signal from the operation sensing means 24. When the user operates only one of the pair of handles 14, the control unit 16 controls the brake unit 20 to brake the wheel 13.
