Die vorliegende Erfindung umfasst stabile und wasserlösliche Lösungen mit antimikrobieller Wirkung. Diese Lösungen sind als Konservierungsmittel für kosmetische und dermatologische Produkte geeignet. Als Lösemittel und Hauptbestandteil der Lösungen dient mindestens ein wasserlöslicher, zweiwertiger Alkohol (Alkandiol). Zur Stabilisierung wird in begrenztem Umfang Wasser zugesetzt. Die Lösungen enthalten außerdem mindestens eine Carbonsäure und gleichzeitig mindestens ein Carbonsäuresalz.
