Disclosed are phosphono(difluoromethyl)-naphthalene and phosphono(difluoromethyl)-quinoline derivatives of formula (I), salts thereof, and methods for their preparation. Specific examples of compounds of formula (I) include: 3-((E)-2-{ 5-bromo-6-[difluoro(phosphono)methyl]-2-naphthyl} ethenyl)benzoic acid, [(3-bromo-6-cyano-2-naphthyl)(difluoro)methyl]phosphonic acid, [(3-bromo-6-cyano-2-naphthyl)(difluoro)methyl]phosphonic acid, Diammonium [(6-bromo-2-cyanoquinolin-7-yl)(difluoro)methyl]phosphate. Compounds of formula (I) are useful for treating type 2 diabetes mellitus, cancer and other PTP-1B mediated diseases.
