A wood boring insect detector (110) comprises a housing (120) defining a hollow interior chamber (126) and including an opening (127) connecting the interior chamber to the exterior; a spacer member (128) surrounding the opening and defining an internal cavity (129); and an acoustic sensor (140) mounted within the interior chamber (126). A probe (130) projects through the opening and the internal cavity of the spacer. An exposed tip portion (132) of the probe is for insertion into a specimen (100). A base portion (134) of the probe is connected to the acoustic sensor (140). The spacer member defines a separation between the housing (120) and the specimen (100) and a depth of insertion of the probe tip (132) into the specimen. When the tip portion (132) is inserted into a specimen, wood boring insect activity within the specimen is transmitted as vibrations along the probe (130) to the acoustic sensor (140), which converts those vibrations to an output signal of a characteristic acoustic frequency indicative of the presence of wood boring insect activity within the specimen (100).
