A method of producing a population of cardiomyocytes from pluripotent stem cells is disclosed. The population may be enriched for either atrial or ventricular cardiomyocytes, and the resulting ventricular population may be essentially free of pacemaker cells. The method comprises incubating pluripotent stem cells in a suitable medium containing a BMP component and an activin component, and the amount of activin may be varied to enrich cardiomyocytes, either atria or ventricles. Besides enriched populations, methods of using the same to treat patients in need of heart repair are disclosed.
