A docking system adapted for use with a commercially available handheld data processing device (100) of a type including a display, a processor and an 1/0 port is disclosed. The docking system includes a connection means (102) adapted to connect to the 1/0 port of the handheld device a medical diagnostic scan probe unit (105) adapted to collect medical diagnostic data and to transmit the data to the handheld processing device via the connection means (103) a software application adapted to run on the processor to process the data and to display the information resulting from the processing of the data on the display means to accept user Input via the handheld device, and to use such user input to control functions of the probe unit and a dock assembly (101) adapted to at least partially surround the handheld device to support and protect the device. The dock assembly, when at least partially surrounding the handheld device prevents withdrawal of the hand held device from the body to thereby prevent disconnection of the connection means from the 1/0 port of the handheld device (100).
