The assembly for a phacoemulsification surgical system includes a suction system arranged to draw fluid from a surgical site. The aspiration system includes a flexible small diameter aspiration catheter that includes a suction path in the lens emulsion handpiece and is in fluid communication with the suction path. The small bore suction conduit has a nominal inner diameter of less than about 0.050 inches to reduce the level of occlusal surge in the surgical system.
