An insert includes: a puncture needle main body 15a which has an opening 15b at a tip and is formed in a hollow shape and of which at least a tip portion is inserted into a subject； an optical fiber 14 that is provided in a hollow portion 15c of the puncture needle main body 15a along a length direction of the puncture needle main body 15a； and a photoacoustic wave generation portion 16 that is provided at a light emission end 14a of the optical fiber 14 which is disposed on a tip side of the puncture needle main body 15a, absorbs light emitted from the light emission end 14a, and generates photoacoustic waves. A surface of the light emission end 14a of the optical fiber 14 is rougher than a surface of a light incident end of the optical fiber.
