The disclosure relates to phthalimido-piperidine derivatives of the general formula (II), wherein the variables are as defined in the specification. The disclosure also provides a process for preparing optically active 3-(phthalimido)piperidine. These compounds are used to further synthesise 8-(3-aminopiperidin-1-yl)xanthine that are suitable for treating diabetes mellitus type I or type II, prediabetes or impaired glucose tolerance, arthritis, obesity, allograft transplantation or osteoporosis caused by calcitonin.
