A method and apparatus for implementing a userinterface for displaying uterine contraction information is provided. The contraction signal is processed to derive a sequence ofcontraction persistence indices. Each contraction persistence index in thesequence is associated to a portion of the contraction signal andconveys whether there is an excess in the rate of contraction in theassociated portion of the contraction signal. If there is an excess inthe rate of contraction in the associated portion of the contractionsignal, the contraction persistence index conveys whether thisexcess is part of a sustained pattern of excess in the rate of contractionsor whether the excess is likely to be transient. The sequence ofcontraction persistence indices is displayed to a user. Optionally, thegraphical user interface is adapted for selectively causing an alarmevent based at least in part on the sequence of contractilitypersistence indices. The method and apparatus may be implemented onany suitable computing platform such as for example desktopcomputers, laptop computers and personal digital assistants (PDAs).
