The methods and compositions of the present invention are directed to the treatment of diabetic nephropathy and related disorders. In particular, the methods and compositions of the present invention utilize pharmaceutical grades of carbohydrate of galactose or a pharmaceutical composition thereof, alone or in combination with other therapeutic agents. In animal models, effective reduction of nephropathic markers was observed.
