A system that can reduce the effect of oxygen inhibition for Nannochloropsis oculata cultivation is disclosed. The cell culture chamber is made of a transparent spinner flask where it contains fluorochemical liquid and Walne’s medium with pH of 8 serving as the oxygen carrier and culture medium, respectively. Both liquids are immiscible and therefore separate into two phases, in which the fluorochemical liquid is on the bottom due to higher density. The spinner flask includes multiple openings. Upon operation, the Walne’s medium must be controlled at 25 ± 2℃, and continuously illuminated using a light source with intensity of 80 μE/m2/s. The magnetic paddle should be set at the interface between Walne’s medium and fluorochemical liquid, and agitated continuously to transfer dissolved oxygen from the culture medium to the fluorinated liquid. The oxygen-carrying fluorochemical liquid will be aspirated to an external gas exchange unit for deoxygenation through nitrogen aeration. Afterward, the deoxygenated fluorochemical liquid is pumped back to the spinner flask for recycling.
