Method of treating a patient having a tissue to be exposed to the ischemic event is provided. The method is carried out by administering parenterally in an amount effective to improve the tolerance or resistance to ischemic events in the organization, a formulation comprising a halogenated volatile anesthetic. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the amount of formulation administered to the patient is less than the amount of anesthetic. Before the ischemic event, the formulations may be administered simultaneously or after.
