The magnetic resonance imaging system (1) comprises: a device (4) to generate a homogeneous magnetic field a system (5) of active gradient coils to generate at least one magnetic field gradient inside a measurement volume at least one breast holder (6) to have an internal space for positioning the breast (2.1) during an MRI scan inside the measurement volume at least one local coil system including at least one individual coil (7) operated as an antenna to receive magnetic resonance signals and preferably at least one cushion (8) for stabilizing the breast (2.1) by filling the internal space between an external boundary of the internal space and the breast (2.1). At least one breast holder (6) includes at least one cushion (8) in the internal space.
