The present invention deals with a separating apparatus and method for separating an individual insect from a group of social insects which have a single cooperative dwelling, preferably honey bees, furthermore, the invention relates to a selecting apparatus for continuously selecting individual insects from a group of social insects which have a single cooperative dwelling, preferably honey bees, based on at least one predetermined feature of the individual insects, which are being continuously screened, and to a cooperative dwelling for social insects, preferably a man-made beehive. This invention in particular deals with control of the parasitic varroa destructor mite population by screening individual bees and separating such bees carrying mites from the bee colony within a beehive.The proposed invention makes it feasible to carry out continuous screening of a group of insects throughout the season.
