PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To equalize the brightness of a spectral image approximately to the brightness of a regular image in an electronic endoscope apparatus to simultaneously display the regular image and the spectral image.

SOLUTION: An object to be observed is irradiated with white light, and the regular image is generated from a Y (luminance)/C (color difference) signal, being the signal of the captured image of the object to be observed. At the same time, the Y (luminance)/C (color difference) signal is converted to R-G-B three color image signals, and estimated spectral image signals (&lambda1s, &lambda2s and &lambda3s) in a prescribed wavelength band are formed from the R-G-B three color image signals and previously stored spectral matrix data. Further, by using the inputted gain of the respective estimated spectral image signals, pseudo-color spectral image signals (&lambda1t, &lambda2t and &lambda3t) are formed. By converting the pseudo-color spectral image signals (&lambda1t, &lambda2t and &lambda3t) to Y/C signal in association with the R-G-B three color image signals, the spectral image is generated. The average luminance of the generated spectral image is set to be approximately equal to the average luminance of the regular image.
