PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for parenterally obtaining a body fluid sample by reducing contamination from microorganisms or other contaminants external to a body fluid source such as microorganisms existing on the skin. The apparatus includes a pre-sample reservoir, a flow diversion mechanism and a flow metering mechanism. The flow diverting mechanism includes an inlet port couplable to the lumen defining device to receive bodily fluid from the patient, a first outlet port fluidly couplable to the pre-sample reservoir and a second fluid port couplable to the sample reservoir.
