An endoscope system 10 includes a light source unit 20, an image signal acquisition unit 54, a light source control unit 22, a gain adjustment unit, and a freeze button 13a. The light source control unit 22 limits the light emission amount by controlling the light emission amount within a range equal to or less than a predetermined first upper limit value. The gain adjusting unit adjusts the image signal with a second amplification rate larger than the first amplification rate when the light emission amount reaches the first upper limit value, and controls the light source when there is a still image acquisition instruction. The unit 22 enables light emission with a light emission amount exceeding the first upper limit by releasing the light emission amount restriction, and the gain adjustment unit adjusts the image signal with the first amplification factor.
