Provided are compositions and methods for treating Lever congenital darkness (LCA) in a subject. In one aspect, a recombinant adeno-associated viral vector is provided that comprises a nucleic acid molecule comprising a sequence encoding leversillin. In another aspect, the leversillin has the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 1. In another aspect, the nucleic acid molecule has the sequence of SEQ ID NO: 3 or variant thereof.
