A modular handle assembly for supporting and controlling a steerablecatheter having at least one deflection wires includes a handle extendingalong an axis for beingsecured about a portion of the steerable catheter. The modular handle assemblyincludes at leastone barrel rotatably connected to the handle for rotation about the axis, andat least one spindledisposed in and connected with said barrel for rotation about the axis withthe barrel. At leastone guide cable extends from an anchored end being anchored to the spindle toa distant end forconnection with one of the deflection wires of the steerable catheter. Theguide cable is wrappedabout the spindle for axially moving the deflection wires in response torotation of the firstspindle about the axis by the barrel to curl the distal tip of the elongatedbody of the steerablecatheter.
