Apparatus and methods are provided for harvesting small portions (micro grafts) of tissue to form grafts. For example, a hollow tube may be inserted into the tissue at the donor site, wherein the distal end of the hollow tube may have two or more tips or extensions to facilitate separation of the micro-graft from the surrounding tissue. An exemplary apparatus may include a plurality of hollow tubes to simultaneously collect a plurality of micro-grafts. The harvested micrograft may have a small size, for example less than about 1 mm, or less than about 0.3 mm, to promote healing of the donor site and / or to promote the viability of the harvested tissue. The micrograft may be approximately cylindrical or striped and may be placed in a biocompatible matrix that forms the graft or may be implanted directly into the tissue at the receiving site.
