Methods and materials useful for applying pharmacologic agents to the ear aredescribed. The methods involve delivering a composition that contains at leastone viscogenic agent and at least one pharmacologic agent to the epidermalsurface of the tympanic membrane via the ear canal. The composition isdelivered to the tympanic membrane in a flowable form and, after delivery tothe tympanic membrane, becomes sufficiently viscous such that thepharmacologic agent is localized against the tympanic membrane. Suchcompositions can be used to prophylactically and/or therapeutically treatmiddle and inner ear conditions, including otitis media.
