Systems and methods for controlling the filling medium within a balloon catheter are disclosed. The system can include a catheter having an inflatable balloon, a reservoir for the filling medium, and a first conduit for delivering the filling medium from the reservoir to the balloon. The system includes a second conduit for returning the filling medium from the balloon to the reservoir and a pump configured to circulate the filling medium through the conduit. The system can also include a valve assembly configured to be placed in at least three positions. In the first position, the filling medium is delivered to the balloon from the reservoir to inflate the balloon. In the second position, the filling medium is withdrawn from the balloon and returned to the reservoir. In the third position, the filling medium circulates through the conduit between the pump and the balloon, preventing backflow to the reservoir.
