Disclosed is a wasp bait of a size and shape that can be carried by the wasp, said bait comprising at least an attractant component comprising one or more food materials adapted to attract the wasp to the bait such that the wasp carries the bait to its nest, and a toxicant or insecticide component capable of killing wasps in a nest, wherein the attractant component incorporates a protective component layer comprising a destructible material which is adapted to delay contact of the toxicant component with the wasp until the bait is in the nest, the destructible material of the protective component layer having perforations, holes, slits or is easily torn, whereby further manipulation of the bait by one or more wasps will cause at least partial destruction of the protective component to enable release of the toxicant component, wherein the toxicant is encased by the protective component layer and the attractant component encases the protective component layer.
