An implant device is disclosed that includes a plurality of optical sensors, a plurality of microelectrodes, and circuits coupled to the optical sensors and the microelectrodes. The optical sensors may receive incident light. The circuitry may drive the microelectrodes to stimulate neurons that may be aware of the time of light captured by the optical sensors. The device may be embodied as a flexible material that permits the microelectrodes in the vicinity of the nerve cells to the stimulus and that conforms to the shape of the human eye. In another embodiment, a manufacturing method for a flexible device having an array of pixels for a retinal prosthesis is disclosed. The fabrication method may include forming layered structures on the substrate that include the array of pixels, each of the pixels including processing circuits, a microelectrode, and a photosensor. In yet another embodiment, devices and methods for constructing an implantable device that interfaces to retinal cells are disclosed. The device may comprise an array of pixels capable of stimulating the retinal cells.
