Some aspects of the invention provide single stranded oligonucleotides for activating or increasing the expression of hemoglobin (HBB, HBD, HBE1, HBG1 or HBG2). Another aspect provides compositions and kits comprising single stranded oligonucleotides for activating or increasing hemoglobin gene expression. Also provided is a method for regulating the expression of a hemoglobin gene using the single-stranded oligonucleotide.
