Provided herein are nucleic acid sequences encoding hepatitis B virus (HBV) core protein, surface antigen proteins, fragments and combinations thereof, and genetic constructs / vectors and vaccines that express the protein sequences. These vaccines can induce immune responses in the periphery and liver by mobilizing both cellular and humoral drugs. Also provided are methods for immunizing a person prophylactically and / or therapeutically against HBV. Combination vaccines may be used for the specific design of vaccines for specific levels of immune response to HBV challenge.
