An image fusion system provides a predicted alignmentbetween images of different modalities and synchronizationof the alignment, once acquired. A spatial tracker detects and tracksa position and orientation of an imaging device within an environment.A predicted pose of an anatomical feature can be determined, based on previously acquired image data, with respect to a desiredposition and orientation of the imaging device. When the imagingdevice is moved into the desired position and orientation, a relationshipis established between the pose of the anatomical feature in theimage data and the pose of the anatomical feature imaged by theimaging device. Based on tracking information provided by the spatialtracker, the relationship is maintained even when the imagingdevice moves to various positions during a procedure
